How this experience boosts your career

Working as an instructor at a summer camp is much more than a seasonal activity or a simple temporary job. Although at first glance it may seem like a fleeting job, the reality is that it offers invaluable training that can make a difference in any professional career.

Every year, thousands of young people decide to become summer camp instructors with the aim of living a unique experience, but what many don't know is that this role can be a springboard for the future. From the development of interpersonal skills to leadership capacity, being an instructor provides tools that are highly valued in today's world of work.

If you've ever wondered How this experience can boost your professional career, here are the reasons why being a camp instructor can open many doors for you in the labor market.

Key Skills You Develop as a Camp Instructor

Being an instructor at a summer camp involves much more than coordinating recreational activities. This role requires commitment, creativity and strong management skills. Many of the skills acquired during this experience are the same ones that employers in different sectors are looking for.

Here are some of the most valuable skills you can develop working in a camp:

1. Leadership

Leading a group of children or adolescents requires leadership. As an instructor, you learn to make decisions under pressure, to motivate a team and to resolve conflicts effectively. These skills are essential in any professional environment, from education to business management.

2. Teamwork

The success of a camp depends on coordinated work between instructors. Learning to collaborate with others, delegate responsibilities and adapt to different working styles is crucial in any company or organization.

3. Effective communication

The ability to express ideas clearly and persuasively is critical to any career. As an instructor, you improve your verbal and non-verbal communication, as you must explain activities, motivate participants and solve problems effectively.

4. Successful group management

Supervising and organizing groups of children or adolescents is a challenge that requires patience, empathy and organization. If you can successfully manage a group in a camp, you can perform effectively in corporate, educational, or social environments.

5. Problem solving

Summer camps present unexpected situations that require quick and effective solutions. From adapting activities due to the weather to managing conflicts between campers, this ability to resolve is highly valued in any job.

6. Time Management

As an instructor, you must plan and execute activities within a set schedule. Learning to manage time efficiently prepares you for roles where organization and punctuality are essential.

Application of these skills in the world of work

Many people who have worked as instructors in summer camps have found that this experience has been of great help when seeking employment in sectors such as education, tourism, psychology, administration and even entrepreneurship.

Here's how the skills acquired in a camp can be applied in a variety of professional areas:

Education and Pedagogy

Interacting with children and young people, designing educational activities and managing different personalities is excellent preparation for roles in teaching, counseling, and youth development. Many former instructors have found that this experience has prepared them for careers in education, teaching, and youth leadership training.

Business administration and management

Many companies are looking for candidates with experience in leadership and group management. The camps teach instructors to work under pressure, make decisions and manage team dynamics, essential skills for administrative or leadership roles.

Psychology and Social Work

Living together in a camp allows you to develop interpersonal skills, learn about human behavior and acquire strategies to promote social integration. This is especially useful for those who want to work in psychology, social work, or human resources.

Tourism and hospitality

Summer camps are closely linked to the tourism and recreation industry. Those interested in this area can take advantage of their experience as instructors to obtain opportunities at travel agencies, hotels or recreation centers.

Entrepreneurship and creativity

Being a camp instructor teaches you to be creative, to work with limited resources, and to improvise when things don't go as planned. These skills are essential for those who want to start their own business or work in industries where innovation and flexibility are key.

The Power of Networking at Summer Camps

In addition to the skills acquired, another key aspect of working in a camp is the network of contacts that you can build.

The camps are run by organizations that can provide valuable connections for the future. Maintaining good relationships with supervisors and colleagues can open doors to new job opportunities.

Some instructors have obtained letters of recommendation, job references and have even been hired by companies thanks to the connections they made at the camp.

The impact on personal and professional growth

In addition to professional advantages, being a camp instructor also provides personal benefits that can influence daily life and long-term decision-making.

1. Increased self-confidence

Leading activities, resolving conflicts and coordinating groups strengthens self-confidence and improves decision-making.

2. Resilience and adaptability

The challenges that arise in a camp teach instructors to be flexible and to approach problems with a positive attitude.

Frequently Asked Questions about the camp

We answer all your questions!

What is the age range for children to sign up for camp?

In the Camps we only welcome boys and girls from 7 to 15 years of age.

Who takes care of the children?

The children are cared for by an instructor and an assistant, together with instructors specialized in various activities and camp managers who are on the lookout for all campers.

If my child goes with a friend can they be together?

Yes, as long as the children are the same age and both they and the parents agree. Although we can't commit to more than 3 campers on the same team.

Do the rooms or cabins have their own bathrooms?

The vast majority of rooms or cabins have their own bathroom.

Do you help young children bathe and dress?

No, we ask that you consider that children should be independent in activities such as bathing, dressing, combing their hair, going to the bathroom and taking care of their things. Instructors are waiting, but cannot take care of each child individually.

How is communication with children? Can we talk to them?

Calls are not allowed. The communication is through messages on the camp page, delivered daily at breakfast time or the first activity in the morning. Children respond to these messages in letters that are taken photos and sent to the parents' emails.

If my child is carrying medications, how do they manage them?

We have medical staff who administer medications. Parents should write down the information in the registry and hand in medications when leaving their children at the camp.

What do you do in case of an accident? Do they warn us?

The protocols are followed. In case of minor injuries, there is no warning so as not to worry parents. There's a paramedic in the camp. In more serious cases, parents are contacted before taking the child to the hospital.

Do you have any health insurance?

Yes, we have accident insurance that covers up to $150,000.00.

How safe is the camp? Do you have any systems in place?

The camp is safe, with measures such as electric fences, closed circuit television, among others.
