Friends Inside the Camp Last Forever

A summer camp is more than a place where children and teens spend time outdoors or learn new skills; it's a space where deep and lasting friendships are forged. The saying “Friends in the camp last forever” holds a lot of truth, and here we explore why these bonds are so special and last over time.

The intensity of the shared experience

In summer camps, campers live together for an extended period of time, sharing intense and emotionally charged experiences, such as hikes, nights under the stars, physical challenges and team play. According to Erikson (1950), intense emotional experiences during childhood and adolescence tend to leave a deep impression on personal identity, facilitating the formation of lasting bonds.

Environment free from distractions and social pressure

Unlike the school or urban environment, where children and adolescents may be influenced by social pressure, social networks and family expectations, summer camp offers a space free from these distractions. In this environment, young people are able to be more authentic and to form relationships based on the genuine acceptance of their peers, which favors the creation of deeper bonds.

The effect of controlled isolation

Summer camp is characterized by controlled isolation: campers are separated from their usual environment, making it easier to focus on the relationships they form within the camp. The theory of “propitious isolation”, described by Berman and Davis-Berman (2005), highlights how temporary removal from the everyday environment can intensify interpersonal relationships, since individuals are more dependent on each other to meet their emotional and social needs.

Overcoming Challenges as a Team

Camps often present a variety of physical and emotional challenges that campers must face together, such as hiking, obstacle courses, or organizing group activities. According to Vygotsky (1978), learning and social development occur best through cooperation and interaction. In the camp, this cooperative interaction in the face of common challenges fosters mutual trust and respect, which in turn strengthens bonds between peers.

Memories That Last

Shared memories are one of the most powerful reasons summer camp friendships often last so long. Memorable experiences create a shared narrative that reinforces the connection between friends, even when they are separated by time or distance. According to Schacter (1996), episodic memory, which refers to the ability to remember past experiences in detail, plays a crucial role in maintaining long-term relationships, as people remember significant moments lived with others.

Staying in touch in the digital age

Although distance can separate friends after camp, social media and technology allow those friendships to last. The concept of “persistent connectivity” (Hampton, 2017) describes how modern technology facilitates the continuation of relationships formed in intensive environments, such as summer camps. Through messages, photos and calls, campers can continue to interact and remember their joint experiences, reinforcing the emotional bond created during the camp.

Conclusion

The friendships formed at summer camps last forever due to a combination of unique factors: the intensity of shared experiences, the absence of external pressures, cooperation in overcoming challenges and the creation of unforgettable memories. In addition, in the digital age, these relationships can be easily maintained, reinforcing the bonds formed in that special environment. For these reasons, summer camps remain a space where friendships not only form quickly, but can last a lifetime.

Frequently Asked Questions about the camp

We answer all your questions!

What is the age range for children to sign up for camp?

In the Camps we only welcome boys and girls from 7 to 15 years of age.

Who takes care of the children?

The children are cared for by an instructor and an assistant, together with instructors specialized in various activities and camp managers who are on the lookout for all campers.

If my child goes with a friend can they be together?

Yes, as long as the children are the same age and both they and the parents agree. Although we can't commit to more than 3 campers on the same team.

Do the rooms or cabins have their own bathrooms?

The vast majority of rooms or cabins have their own bathroom.

Do you help young children bathe and dress?

No, we ask that you consider that children should be independent in activities such as bathing, dressing, combing their hair, going to the bathroom and taking care of their things. Instructors are waiting, but cannot take care of each child individually.

How is communication with children? Can we talk to them?

Calls are not allowed. The communication is through messages on the camp page, delivered daily at breakfast time or the first activity in the morning. Children respond to these messages in letters that are taken photos and sent to the parents' emails.

If my child is carrying medications, how do they manage them?

We have medical staff who administer medications. Parents should write down the information in the registry and hand in medications when leaving their children at the camp.

What do you do in case of an accident? Do they warn us?

The protocols are followed. In case of minor injuries, there is no warning so as not to worry parents. There's a paramedic in the camp. In more serious cases, parents are contacted before taking the child to the hospital.

Do you have any health insurance?

Yes, we have accident insurance that covers up to $150,000.00.

How safe is the camp? Do you have any systems in place?

The camp is safe, with measures such as electric fences, closed circuit television, among others.
